What is a Vape Coil?
Your vape coil is the crucial component of your vape kit. Designed to perform a bit like the element in a kettle, the battery-powered heating element in your vaping device’s tank heats up the e-liquid in your tank or pod device and draws it into your wick. The coil heats the liquid into vapour for you to smoke, creating rich, satisfying clouds.
Some vape kits have built-in coils, like a disposable or a pre-filled vape pod with a coil, while others have coils that can be removed and replaced. Advanced devices can even take up to eight coils and have many different kinds of configurations, such as temperature control.
What Are Vape Coils Made Of?
Coils have wick material inside them, as well as a coil wire. Every material produces a slightly different quality of vapour and flavour. Depending on what kind of coil you have, the wire can be made from a variety of materials, including mesh wire, stainless steel, nickel, titanium, Kanthal wire or nichrome. The wick is generally made of cotton and can absorb e-liquid with a lower or higher nicotine content.
Most coils have ohm ranges between 2.4 and 2.8, which measures the electrical resistance of the wire. High-resistance coils use less e-liquid, produce smaller vapour clouds, and use less power from the battery. Lower resistance coils, on the other hand, produce more vapour and use more power from the battery for stronger flavours.
Types of Vape Coils
There are a few different kinds of coils for e-cigs. Depending on your vaping preferences, style, and needs, it’s important to make sure that you’re using the right coil for your device. Some coils are also brand-specific and only work in the related brand’s device, while others might not offer the power you need to match your style of smoking, whether it’s DTL or MTL vaping.
Single Vertical Coils
Also known as standard coils, single vertical coils have one wrap of wire with the wicking material around it. They come in different resistances, depending on the specifications of your device.
A lot of starter kits use only one high-resistance coil to heat up e-liquid for a simple vaping experience. Vertical Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) coils create a hit similar to that of a cigarette with less vapour, making them best for MTL vaping.
Some devices can take two or more Direct-to-Lung (DTL) vape coils, with a few kits even being able to take eight sub-ohm coils. Multiple sub-ohm coils are used best for DTL vaping in advanced devices, as they have coil resistance lower than usual to heat up the e-liquid. It’s important to stock up on enough lower-resistance replacement coils if your device takes more than one.
These coils are not made up of strands in a coil shape, but they are still made of wire. Mesh coils have a few small holes and take up a lot of space, making them fantastic sub-ohm coils for great flavour from your e-liquid. They produce clouds with more intense flavour because they have a more balanced distribution of heat and cool down faster.
Net coils are similar to mesh coils, except they have bigger holes. They’re much larger as a result and produce exquisite e-liquid flavours and fantastic vapour clouds.
These coils are different from low-resistance vertical coils due to the longer length of the coil wires. Twisted coils are generally made up of many strands of coil wire wrapped up around each other. These coils are best for a more advanced vaping experience with sub-ohm coils, as they are designed for enhanced flavour and bigger clouds.

Vape Coils - FAQs
Got a few questions about vape coils? Have a look at our FAQs below.
How do I know what coil to use for my vape?
It depends on the kind of device, the ohms you require, the size of your tank, and the kind of vapour you’re looking for. Box mods and sub-ohm tank coils should be low-resistance and high wattage. If you have a vape pen, the tank is pretty small, and the device needs more ohms (resistance), so a lower-wattage coil will work best.
Can I replace coils in disposable vapes?
Disposable tank coils shouldn’t be removed, as it’s designed for a single-use vape coil kit. You should discard your disposable vape after the battery or flavour runs out.
What is the lifespan of a vaping coil?
Vape coils usually last between one and two weeks, depending on how often you vape. Some coils can even last a month if you don’t smoke too often. However, if you vape on the regular, it’s best to stock up on replacement coils from Vaper Store in advance.
How do I know when I should replace the coil?
You can tell that your vape coil needs to be replaced if it starts tasting a bit burned or the flavour or vapour isn’t as strong as it used to be. Sometimes, you may hear a bubbling noise or your device will leak.
How long should I wait between vape hits?
You should wait at least 15 to 30 seconds before taking another puff after your first hit. This is because the wicks need time to absorb more e-liquid before you take another pull. If you don’t give it a few seconds, you’ll experience a dry or unappealing hit.
